How to pick a seaside hotel — the 8 details that really matter
Picking a seaside stay is more about logistics than star ratings. A 3* family guest house can easily out-do a 4* hotel where the beach is 800 m away and there is no air-con. Here are the 8 filters we recommend before you book anywhere on the Russian Black Sea coast.
1. Real distance to the beach
«5 minutes to the sea» should be 5 minutes walking, not driving. Check the route on a map — if there is a railway line or a big road in between, the walk gets noticeably longer.
2. Type of beach
Lazarevskoye, Loo, Adler — mostly pebbles. If you have small kids, bring beach shoes and an inflatable mat; sandy spots are rarer.
3. Air-conditioning
In July and August it is not optional. Confirm A/C in the room (not just «in the corridor») before you pay.
4. Cancellation terms
Free cancellation up to 7 days before arrival is the new normal. Anything stricter usually means a small private host who needs the certainty — fine, just go in with eyes open.
5. Breakfast or kitchen
Either breakfast included or a kitchen you can use. With kids — a kitchen wins.
6. Real photos
Ask for fresh photos of the exact room, ideally with daylight. Aggregator stock photos and the actual room don’t always match.
7. Owner contact
A phone number that picks up matters more than the booking platform’s chat. If something goes wrong at midnight, you want a person, not a ticket system.
8. Reviews on multiple sites
Don’t trust just one source. Cross-check Google, Yandex, the host’s own website. A guest house with steady 4.7–5.0 across all three is almost always a safe pick.
Valeo guest house ticks all eight by default: real photos, 180 m to the beach, A/C in every room, free cancellation up to 7 days, breakfast on request, owner picks up at any time of day, 4.9 average across review platforms.
